Ordinary out of place
For our first formative assignment, the theme I chose was 'Ordinary out of place'. To illustrate this idea, I wanted to create a scene including 3 characters: the two visible ones representing this majority that believes in an out of our ordinary reality, having for dinner pompoms and cotton strands. The non visible character represents a vision of our reality with a 'normal meal': pasta and water.
At first, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to transmit the idea I had clearly. As time went on while I tried to set the scene I felt more and more anxious that I would have to switch to a different theme but, nevertheless, I didn’t give up and committed to my vision.
Finally, as I started taking pictures, I felt relief and satisfaction. I understood that this was my first work and that the result might not be perfect but the photo I ended up with fit the emotions I wanted to transmit:
a sense of uneasiness represented by the stare shared, filled with tension. Moreover, the fact that the picture is taken from this third character/audience’s point of view, integrating the spectator into it and enhancing this feeling of agitation in the viewer.
Finally, I used Photoshop to enhance the bright colours to create contrast with the more somber atmosphere of the picture.
To conclude, I learned a lot from this assignment. I learned how to use Photoshop and even though it may not be very intuitive at first, it’s a very useful tool and I’m glad I learned how to use it. In the future I hope I can find different places to take pictures as my house is not adapted for photographic work.
